Today, Madam for America, the Midwest’s leading organization for Black women in politics, was honored with the 2021 Excellence Award from the Association for Women Lawyers of Greater Kansas City. Dorothy L. McClendon, Esq., president of Madam for America, released the following statement:

“Madam for America is committed to elevating the political power of Black Women throughout the Midwest. We are grateful that the Association for Women Lawyers of Greater Kansas City has acknowledged the work of our organization to assist women, including attorneys, to increase their involvement in the political area and overall civic engagement. We are honored to receive the 2021 Excellence Award!"

Madam for America, is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to recruiting and training leaders, supporting strong campaigns, and mentoring Black women for public office throughout the Midwest. Since our founding on July 25, 2019, Madam for America has helped women win competitive campaigns – in state and local races – researched the issues that impact women and families, and we turn out women voters to the polls. With less than two years in existence, we have helped elect five women to office. In 2021, during COVID-19, we supported Vice President Kamala Harris to make history as the first woman, first Black woman and first Asian-American woman to be elected to this position in addition to Congresswoman Cori Bush as she became the first Black woman from the State of Missouri elected to the United States House of Representatives. With our support, Heather Hardinger became the first Black women elected to the Springfield, Missouri City Council and Megan Marshall became the first Black person elected to the Lee’s Summit, Missouri School Board. Since our launch, more women have reached out to Madam for America about running for office, laying the groundwork for candidates for local, state and federal offices.
